Ants on Campus

Close-up of P. imparis.

We have received word from the Bay Area Ant Survey that we have Prenolepsis imparis ants on campus.  Grade 2 collected ants behind the Acorn Room, on the Southeastern edge of campus.  Kindergarten collected on the Northwestern edge, mostly by the greenhouse.  Both collections yielded the same species P. imparis, or the False Honey Ant.  Our collection last year found both P. imparis and Linepithema humile (the invasive Argentine Ant).  Looks like L. humile is on the decline.  For more information about ants in the San Mateo area visit the Bay Area Ant Survey on Ant Web.
